What is Primer?
Primer can be used to enhance the various areas you focus on when going through your beauty routine. These areas include your eyes, face, lashes, lips, and even your nails. An item like face primer will smooth out pores, create a base for your makeup, manage oily skin, or help prevent excessive shine. Essentially, a primer for your beauty routine works the same way as a paint primer - it sets the base coat for the surface on which you’re working. Primers can also work to reduce the amount of makeup you use, making the application a little easier in the process.
Types of Primers
There are lots of different primer options available, and each style is designed to work well with different skin types and for the various looks you’re sure to try to achieve.
If you have oily skin, look for a mattifying primer, typically one with a silicone base. This kind of primer creates a barrier between the skin and makeup, smoothing your skin and reducing shine. Conversely, if you have dry skin, look for a hydrating primer that is not silicone based. Instead, look for an option that offers antioxidants to help moisturize and rejuvenate.
You can also find primers designed to help color-correct your skin (for example, green primers are used to counteract redness on the skin, while blue primers offset hues of yellow), eyeshadow primer, mascara primer, lip primer, and more!
How to Apply Primer
Applying primer is easy to do, and is a simple process to add to your makeup routine that will offer great results that are worth the extra effort!
Apply any moisturizer you normally do first, and then allow your skin to fully dry before adding any primer. When starting with the primer, begin at the center of your face, and apply a light layer, dabbing it on your face with your fingers ​or a makeup sponge. After the primer is on and dry (give it at least a minute or two to dry so you don’t get uneven patches), you can go ahead and apply foundation and complete the rest of your routine.
