The difference between islands and carts
If it wasn't obvious, there's a big difference between a kitchen island and a kitchen cart. The island features a hardtop to help with food prep, and often features cabinet storage to help get some of your cooking appliances out of the way and easily accessible. They're designed to match different decors but they do trend towards a slightly more rustic look. Often they're made with quality materials and have a real heftiness to them. If you enjoy sturdy furniture then there's no reason not splurge.
The kitchen cart is a little different. They also feature a top, but it's more for holding than prepping. They also tend to feature undercarriage storage, some without doors. They're ultimately lighter and exclusively for storage. With that said, if you don't need more counter space, but you need more storage, this is the best option for you. Islands are designed for larger spaces, so carts a great option for smaller kitchens with less forgiving layouts.
Making the most of your cart
It's very likely that your current counter space is at an all-time premium. You can't have it too cluttered because you need space for a drying rack, your coffee maker, and maybe a few other basic appliances. You can bake potatoes in minutes, rather than doing so in the oven. No more reheating leftovers in a skillet (or even not saving leftovers in the first place).
