All Are Welcome at Kohl's Alhambra

Sporting a red stucco exterior and circled by a red brick wall, Kohl's is a perfect reflection of Alhambra's namesake. Kohl's, located on South Fremont Avenue where it meets W. Mission Road, has a straightforward history in town. But Alhambra and its name tell a more winding story.

The city in northeast Los Angeles County was named by Ruth Wilson, daughter of the town founder and General George Patton's mother, following its incorporation in 1903. She was fascinated by Washington Irving's "Tales of Alhambra" and the descriptions of its namesake fortress and palace in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. The fort got its name from the Arabic word for red castle, which brings us all the way back to the Kohl's crimson façade.

Fortress iconography aside, the store fits perfectly into the town's welcoming status as the Gateway to the San Gabriel Valley. The region's Spanish roots extend to local architecture and the other communities Kohl's Alhambra serves, including Pasadena, Monterey Park, El Monte and West Covina.

A testament to its welcoming and diverse vibe, Alhambra is home to a large Chinese population. About 55,000 people visit the city each year to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The lunar new year festival takes place over five blocks on Valley Boulevard in one of Southern California's most highly concentrated Chinese-American commercial districts. Best of all, it's just a couple miles from Kohl's front door.
