Different Types of Corkscrews & Wine Bottle Openers
When beginning your search for wine tools for your home, you’re sure to start noticing that wine bottle openers come in a wide variety of styles, shapes, functions, features, and designs. All of the openers available do the same task, so it’s up to your personal preference as to which one you select.
- Electric wine openers
Let the opener do all the work with an electric wine bottle opener or corkscrew. These items easily open bottles of wine - simply place the opener on the cork, push a button, and let the tool do the rest!
- Winged corkscrews
These devices require a bit more manual work, but are almost just as easy to operate! Simply screw the corkscrew into the cork, push down on the wings, and watch the cork pop right out!
- Waiter’s corkscrew
This type of opener requires the most work on your part, but offers a simple design and small size, meaning it’s easy to take on-the-go. It’s also a tried-and-true tool that’s used by pros everywhere. To operate, screw in the corkscrew until the final loop is just above the cork. Rest the first notch of the lever (the hinge point closest to the handle) on the opening of the bottle. Bracing the whole lever against the bottleneck, pull up on the handle until the cork can’t rise any higher. Then hook the second notch (the hinge point at the end of the lever) on the opening of the bottle and repeat. The cork should slide out cleanly, and you’ll be all set to pour and serve!
Using Wine Sealers & Pourers
Another wine tool that’s a must-have for any home is a wine sealer or stopper. Stoppers and sealers create a seal to prevent air from entering the bottle and reduce the oxygen that gets in the bottle. This slows down the rate of oxidation of the wine, keeping it fresher for longer!
Pourers are another type of bottle topper that can be used with wine. A wine pourer is also known as an aerator. It’s a device that exposes wine to more air than it would otherwise be exposed to through the normal process of opening a wine bottle. A wine aerator makes the process of aeration instantaneous. Allowing the wine to “breathe” means that the wine will offer a better tasting experience for certain types of wine. Red wines tend to benefit from aeration the most.
