Mineral Sunscreen

Sunscreen is one of the most important products in any skincare routine. It’s an everyday essential item necessary for protection from the sun and its UV rays. Exposure to natural and artificial UV light can have negative effects on the body. Fortunately, you can curb these effects by making mineral sunscreen a regular part of your daily skincare routine. Shop Sephora at Kohl’s to find a wide assortment of sunscreens with an SPF 30 or higher.

What is Mineral Sunscreen?

Mineral sunscreen, also known as physical sunscreen, sits on your skin’s surface and physically blocks the sunlight from getting to your skin. This option will work for those with acne-prone or sensitive skin as mineral SPF doesn’t get absorbed by the skin. Since it doesn’t get absorbed, it’s less likely to clog pores.

Difference Between Mineral Sunscreen & Chemical Sunscreen

Sunscreens are divided into two major classes: chemical and physical. When choosing between mineral or chemical sunscreen, one isn’t necessarily better than the other. Both options have been shown to reduce short- and long-term damage to the skin, as well as reduce the risk of sunburn and skin cancer. The main difference between the two is how they do just that.

Mineral sunscreen formulas use zinc oxide by itself or in combination with titanium dioxide to block UV light. In addition, physical sunscreens are reef-safe and tend to be gentler on the skin. However, one major downside to mineral sunscreens is that they typically have a white consistency. This often makes it difficult to blend into all skin tones. Fortunately, new formulations are being developed so that they fully blend into the skin without leaving behind a white cast.

Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, allow UV light into the skin. They act almost like a sponge that absorbs UV rays and converts the rays into heat, which is then released from the body. Common ingredients in chemical - or conventional - sunscreens include oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate.

When Should You Use Sunscreen?

While most people think of sunscreen as only a necessity during the summertime, it’s actually recommended by experts that you wear sunscreen every single day! It’s important to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside, which allows the product to bind to your skin.

Be sure to reapply sunscreen every two hours, or immediately after taking part in water activities like swimming. Whether you choose a chemical or mineral sunscreen, always wear protective clothing and accessories whenever possible and limit your amount of exposure to the midday sun.
