Choosing the Right Moisturizer for Combination Skin
Combination skin provides a challenge when it comes to choosing the right moisturizer. A product that works well for dry skin issues may not work well for oily areas, and vice versa.
One way to try to fit all your skin’s needs is to choose a moisturizing product that is light enough for use on the entire face. This could work if your skin is slightly dry and slightly oily. However, if your skin is more on the drier side, or more on the oily side, the areas that need the most moisturizing might not get properly hydrated, and the areas that need cleansing to remove oil might not get the attention they need either.
For total moisturization, you may need to use two products. Consider using a heavier moisturizer on the areas of your face that are usually drier to combat the dryness. Then, use a lighter moisturizer on the oily areas of your face to fight that issue or keep it from getting worse.
Moisturizer Ingredients for Combination Skin
Many ingredients can be found in the wide selection of moisturizers on the market. Knowing the ingredients that work best for combination skin will help you get the most out of your daily skin care routine!
One type of ingredient to consider is a collection of oils called noncomedogenic oils. It may seem counterintuitive to add more oil to your face if you deal with an overabundance of it in the first place, but noncomedogenic oils are ones that won’t clog pores. Examples of these oils include squalane, and plant oils like marula, jojoba, and argan. If, however, your skin is quite oily, opt for an oil-free moisturizer instead, as any additional oils will make your skin more slick and shiny.
For issues of dryness, look for moisturizers that include hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and seaweed, as these ingredients help the skin retain moisture.
Antioxidants are great for overall skin health, as they help keep combination skin looking healthy and protected. Antioxidants like vitamins C and E work to protect skin against free radical damage and smoothen the skin.
Aside from the ingredients you want to add to your skin care routine, there are also some you should avoid if you have combination skin. Try to skip out on products that offer synthetic humectants, which can eventually cause your skin to dry out. These include such additives as butylene glycol, sorbitol, and Tremella extract
Also avoid occlusives, which are added to moisturizers to counteract the effect of synthetic humectants, which make the formulation heavier. These ingredients include lanolin, mineral oil, petrolatum, and shea butter.
Lastly, avoid moisturizers with added fragrances, as these add-ins can irritate the skin, especially if you have sensitive skin or acne.
Applying the Moisturizer to Your Skin
To keep your combination skin looking hydrated and healthy, be sure to do so a couple times each day.
In the morning, moisturize with a light SPF-containing product. Apply the moisturizer right after you clean your face with a gentle soap, while your skin is still a little damp.
At night, again clean your face first, apply any serums you might use, and then apply your moisturizer. Consider using a heavier night cream if you have particular areas of your face that are really dry.
