Finding Your Fitted Hat Size
Knowing your hat size is the important first step of buying a new fitted hat. And the easiest way to find your hat size is to measure it using a string and a tape measure or other ruler.
First, take the string and wrap it around the back of your head, just above the tops of your ears. Bring the two loose sides of the string together on your forehead, in the spot where you like to have a hat sit on your head. Ensuring the string is not too tight, mark the string with a pen or other writing utensil to indicate the distance around your head.
Next, take that string and measure it, using the tape measure. This will give you your head’s circumference. With that measurement figured out, you can now look at the sizing information provided on product pages to see what hat size your head’s circumference corresponds to.
To ensure your new hat fits even better on your head, try soaking the crown of it in hot water. Then, wear the hat until it completely dries. Allow the hat to cool off first before putting it on, and note that this will only work if your hat is made of cotton or wool. Simply add warm (not hot) water to a sink, drop in a small amount of laundry detergent, do a quick spot wash on the hat for any problem areas, and then allow the hat to soak in the water for anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on how dirty the hat is.
About halfway through the soak, spot clean any problem areas again, then return the hat to the water. Once you’re OK with how the hat is looking, remove it from the soapy water and rinse it off with fresh warm water. Allow excess water to drip off, then take a towel and gently pat down the hat to ensure excess water is removed. As the hat will still be soaking wet, place it on a canister or other item that will allow the hat to keep its shape while drying. Place a towel underneath the hat and canister to catch any drips of water. Give the hat plenty of time to dry, and if you’re in a hurry, focus a fan on the hat to speed up the process.
