Bulb Type
To help answer a few of those questions, start with deciding on the bulb style and type you want for your Christmas decor. Incandescent lights are generally less expensive and give off a warm glow. LED lights are long-lasting and energy-efficient, but do tend to cost a bit more.
Once you’ve settled on the bulb type, you can begin to decide which style of lights you’re looking for. Many styles exist, including string lights, large bulb lights, net lights, icicle lights, projection spotlights, and more. Each provides their own unique look and design - for example, the large bulb lights provide retro appeal that’s sure to evoke memories of Christmases past, while net lights are easily installed; just place them on top of bushes and you’re all set.
Bulbs are also available in many different colors, including the ever-popular bright white, traditional multi-colored, or even a mix of both. It all comes down to personal preference when choosing the right color for your home!
How Many Light Strands Do You Need?
Bulbs and light colors have been decided...now how many lights do you actually need for your house? Well, it depends if you’re decorating outside or inside your home.
If you’re decorating an exterior tree, plan on using 100 to 200 mini Christmas tree lights per vertical foot-and-a-half of the tree in question. When decorating an interior Christmas tree, stick with about 100 mini Christmas tree lights per vertical foot-and-a-half of tree.
When lining roofs and overhangs, use light strands that have less space between bulbs. This provides a clean, coordinated look. Strands of lights with more space between bulbs are ideal for slender posts and the branches of trees in your yard.
To ensure you have enough lights for your decorating project, always err on the side of caution and purchase more than you think you might need. Chances are, you’ll likely need (or at the very least, will be able to use) the extra lights you purchased!

- Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for how many strands of lights you can safely connect together. Be sure not to draw too much power from your outlets, either.
- Be sure to know if the lights you are using are able to be used both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor lights are designed to be larger and will possibly give off more heat than indoor lights, meaning they should never be used inside. Outdoor lights should also be kept off the ground so moisture does not affect their use.
- To conserve energy, be sure to connect your Christmas light display to an automatic timer that turns the lights on and off when needed.
- Store your lights easily by using cardboard and bubble wrap. Using rectangular cardboard pieces that are 20 x 14 inches, cut a slit at the top of one long side, and at the bottom of the other long side. Place one end of the lights in one of the slits. Then, wind the lights around the cardboard and secure the other end in the other slit. You can even plug the ends together to keep the lights nice and tidy. To protect the lights, place bubble wrap between the cardboard pieces, and store everything in a handy storage bin.
