Discover Stylish Area Rugs & Accent Rugs for Your Home

Transforming the look and feel of a room doesn’t always require a major renovation. Sometimes, all you need is the right foundation. Whether you are searching for a cozy layer to soften hardwood floors or a bold statement piece to tie your furniture together, area rugs and accent rugs offer the perfect blend of style and function.

At Kohl’s, we understand that your home needs to work for real life. From busy mornings with the kids to relaxing evenings with friends, your decor should be durable enough to handle daily traffic while still looking beautiful. Explore our wide selection of Kohl's rugs designed to fit every budget, style, and room size, helping you create a space that feels uniquely yours.

How to Choose the Right Rug Size

One of the most common questions shoppers have is about sizing. Choosing the correct dimensions is critical because a rug that is too small can make a room feel disjointed, while one that is too large can overwhelm the space. A general rule of thumb is to leave about 18 inches of bare floor exposed around the edges of the rug to frame the room elegantly.

Living Room Layouts

In the living room, your rug serves as an anchor. For open-concept spaces or large family rooms, a 9x12 rug is often the best choice. This size allows all your furniture legs—sofas and chairs included—to sit completely on the rug, creating a cohesive and luxurious island for your seating area.

If you have a smaller space or a tighter budget, an 8x10 area rug is a smart alternative. A popular styling trick here is to place just the front legs of your sofa and armchairs on the rug. This anchors the furniture visually while keeping the layout open and airy.

Dining Room & Bedroom Tips

For dining areas, function comes first. You want a rug large enough that when guests pull out their chairs, the legs stay on the rug rather than catching on the edge. Look for a size that extends at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides.

In the bedroom, comfort is key. You want something soft underfoot the moment you wake up. A large rug placed perpendicular to the bed (stopping just before your nightstands) works well, or you can opt for runners on either side of the bed for a budget-friendly touch of warmth.

Elevate Your Space with Accent Rugs

While area rugs define entire rooms, accent rugs are the versatile problem-solvers of home decor. Typically smaller in size (often 2x3, 3x5, or 4x6), these rugs add splashes of color and protect specific areas of your floor.

Use accent rugs in the kitchen specifically in front of the sink or stove to provide cushion for your feet while you cook. In the entryway, a durable doormat or small accent rug greets guests and traps dirt before it tracks into the house. They are also an affordable way to experiment with trends. Since they are smaller and lower in price, you can easily swap out an accent rug seasonally—try a floral pattern for spring or a rich, warm tone for the holidays.

Don’t Forget the Rug Pad

Once you find the perfect style, ensure it stays in place with a quality rug pad. A non-slip pad is essential for safety, preventing the rug from sliding out from under you—especially in high-traffic zones like hallways. Beyond safety, a pad adds an extra layer of cushion underfoot and extends the life of your rug by preventing fibers from being crushed against the hard floor.
