Rated 1 out of 5 by from I wish I would have read these reviews. I have had mine for a long time, I have used it twice. I have had to throw out the food both times. I get mush. I only got it out the second time because a friend has one and said his did not work either. We compared the units and at least mine looks like the blades had tried to be sharpened. His are blunt. Every thing I have read here is true. Hard to set up, hard to tear down, makes a horrible mess and the food is not usable. Most of the food is found once I use the pliers to get the thing apart. I am very unsatisfied with this. I bought a good knife sharpener to replace it. I love my mixer, but not the slicer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it for grating cheese I have arthritis in my hands, and the main reason I wanted this set was to grate my own Romano and Parmesan cheese. Pre-packaged grated cheese has a lot of added fillers including Cellulose Powder (that's right - wood pulp). Now, I haven't used it for anything else but but to me it was worth every penny.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works well but housing short lived Works well but after several years the base of housing cracked where the metal fitting attaches to the mixer.. It split at two locations. Compared the aluminum grinder attachment my parents purchased in 1948 and is still going strong, 2 years life out of a plastic piece is unacceptable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dull Blades The drums have super dull blades. They don't chop at all. You will have to force the item that you are trying to chop/slice using the plastic thingy on the top. But the result will be a mushy mess. Save your money and buy something better. I don't recommend this item.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not sure about this yet I tried shredding baby carrots yesterday. Some pieces of carrots got stuck between the white housing and the round shredder disk. What did get through the shredder disk were quite shredded, though. I'm concerned about the food waste. I also had large chunks of carrots mixed in with the shredded carrots in the finished product. The white plastic housing held the orange color of the carrots and no amount of washing could get the stain off. This was my first use so I was surprised that no other reviewers mentioned staining or material remaining between the white plastic housing and the round shredder. I will keep working with it, but may return.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from poor product Being lead to believe that this was a shredder/ slicer I bought it --wrong move-- this wont even shred carrots properly. The edges are all rounded off as if the process of sharping them was over looked . I went to BB&B and pulled another one out for inspection. Same problem. Hate to see Kitchen Aid put out such a poor product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY THIS! I bought this pack last summer. All I really wanted to do was shred cheese and it did that for a while then the cone base flanges became bent and it would not stay on the spindle. Contacted customer support via chat and "Steve" who "helped me" could not do a thing unless I gave him the product number. I provided links to the item in question and described it but there is no part number on anything I have. BAD product. Poor service. Don't buy it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Crack! Well, I am glad to see that I am not the only one who has had problems with this attachment. Have had two of them and they both cracked at the attachment point. I even sent pictures to KA showing the cracks on the second one and was basically told "too bad, so sad" it is past the warranty period. When the first one cracked, I thought it was just a one off, but when it happened again, poor design. Agree also that the cones can be difficult to remove. So, would not purchase or recommend again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not slice I just bought this attachment yesterday. I tried to use it today and it turned my cucumbers into mush, I couldn't even use them. The cucumber skin got stuck between the cone and the housing and the parts that did come out were definitely not slices. I tried the thin slices cone and the thick slices cone. All either gave me was a pile of mushed up cucumbers. Huge waste of money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from No problems here... One should usually read the directions before using a product for the first time. I have no problems with this slicer/shredder though I mainly use it for shredding cheddar cheese. I went through several salad shooters before replacing them with this product. My only recommendation is to clean, dry and put it away soon after using as I have noticed mine tends to show signs of rusting if not cared for soon after using it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor design and poor fit Very poor design. The attachment has a piece that is supposed to fit into a notch on the mixer and then a screw to tighten the attachment. I have never been able to push the attachment into the mixer far enough to align the holes to tighten it. That results in the attachment falling off during use, and since I tried to tighten it to prevent that, the plastic on the screw even cracked. Certainly not worth anywhere near the price of this attachment. I only give it two stars because the concept would be great if the product actually worked.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible Horrible Product I recently purchased my kitchenaid... bought the shredder attachment right away. It does okay with cheese...Does much better after it has been placed in the freezer, as suggested.... Tried to make Cole slaw, and I had to push so hard on the lever to get the cabbage shredded.... Tried to slice onions.... That was horrible... IT MADE NOTHING BUT ONION JUICE!! In my opinion, it should slice through stuff like butter... not turn it into a gloppy, sloppy mess.... what a disappointment.... All my life I have wanted a KA mixer and tools, for such disappointments and hassle....HOW SAD! I should post the videos....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Old and reliable I have owned this attachment for the past 20 years and I love it. We use it at least once a week to shred cheese, vegetables, and slice veggies. We have never had any problems. The only reason I checked the website was to see what it cost for a new one. I know some day this one will wearout. By the way, I have given this attachment to family members and they also love it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Junky blade edge I have to grind most of blade edges with a dremel. Buy a dremel before purchase this toy, and make sure U know which side of the blade needs to be fix (It's a not so funny joke). DIY might lose warranty, so don't try it at home. Just hope Kitchenaid will fix this problem on the later production.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy! Received this as a Christmas gift. So excited to use for slicing vegies for salads and slaws. Difficult to attach and remove. Does not provide uniform shreds or slices. Very slow and takes a lot of pressure to push vegies through. Leaves a big chunk of vegetable not processed. Some is just a pulverized mess. Wish I could return. Will contact customer service.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Useless Brought this as a gift for my wife - as per other reviewers we have had the same experience. It basically doesn't work. Blades are dull & do more mashing/juicing than slicing or shredding and large amounts of food get stuck between the housing and blade. Terrible design. Very disappointed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy! Poor design When I tried to remove the cone, it didn't remove from the shaft. We have tried everything with no luck. What good is this when you can't change cones. Now I'm stuck with only using one cone. The shaft is the turning device that turns the cone. Poor, poor design.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Casing cracked I purchased the shredder many years ago. Shortly thereafter the casing cracked. I have only used it to shred zucchini and cabbage and it works fine. I have finally decided to replace it because of the broken casing. While searching for a replacement I came across these reviews and decided to provide my review even if it is years late.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this shredder/slicer I was a little surprised with the reviews on this. I got mine about 2 years ago. I love it. I use it for everything but tomatoes. I have been thorough at least 4 food processors. and the motors quit or the blades brake. The blades turn to fast for cheese that it ends up melting it. If I try shredding things by hand I usually end up with my fingers getting cut up..... yuck. With this one you can slow it down for softer things or to keep it from mangling stuff. and speed it up for stuff like carrots. You do get bigger chunks between the blade but not any worse then a food processor. And you can just watch and pull them out when they fall in your bowl. When I first got it, the tongs that you hook the blades to where to tight so the blades wouldn't seat. I just took a screw driver and loosened them up and now they work great. They are very easy to clean I just through the whole thing in the dishwasher and forget it. I am thinking about getting another one because I use it so much that it's usually still in the dishwasher when I want to make something else. The only way your getting this away from me is my cold dead fingers!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Kitchenaid Slicers are both Thin I just purchased the attachments and sliced the zucchini I had. Zucchini was firm and very cold. Both the #4 and #6 (thick and thin) slicer mutilated the zucchini. The space appeared equal in both slicer attachments.Very disappointed. Am contemplating taking it back.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I am really disappointed This was a Christmas gift. Everyone in my family was excited that I could use the shredder to make "Grampa's Cheese Spread". I used the attachment to shred two chunks of cheddar cheese today. The shredder worked great. It took longer to clean the attachment than shred the cheese. While cleaning the housing I noticed two cracks where the unit attaches to the blender. As a retired meat cutter, I am familiar with KitchenAid quality. I am really disappointed with this attachment.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from poor quality i bought this about a year ago it rarely gets used do to the hassle as others have stated the cuts arnt even food gets stuck in the housing and the rust for the price i paid and coming from kitchen aid i expected good stainless blades not some generic steel im actually scared to spend any more money on attachments

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stress cracking After a few times grading Parmesan cheese stress cracks appeared at the base of the attachment, and the machining of the part where it slides into the mixer is a poor fit. Doesn't seat all the was in so the lock pin cavity doesn't line up with the thumb screw which is also poorly made. Too much money for such poor quality

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointed in the slicer shredder. The shredder turned my Zucchini to a watery mush. I couldn't even use it. For the price I paid I expected a better operating shredder. I have to keep stopping to clean it out. It's hard to use and clean. But i really like the kitchen-aid mixer. But I won't buy anymore attachments.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Time Saver! I was surprised at the amount of low ratings for this, I've had mine for about a year and tell everyone that it was the best investment! After the mixer, of course :) We buy a lot of hard cheeses like parm and pecorino and blocks of cheddar and similar other cheeses and the grater allows me to grate them in a matter of seconds! I've never had any issues with attaching it or cleaning it. I gave it 4 stars simply because I've never actually used all of the cones, just the small grater one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worth the money the device would not shred cabbage. the cutters are really dull and have no bite to them. pushing hard on the cabbage only mushes the output... we tried all cutters without any success from any of them. This will go back with a major complaint attached.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worthless My husband got me the mixer for Xmas last year with these attachments. Waste of money. Mixer is great. But as for these attachments they're worthless. None of the shredder cones would fit and attach. I had just had surgery and couldn't put muscle into it. So I had my husband try. The notches don't fit at all. Too late to return. And after reading other reviews on other attachments, I'll tell him not to get me anything more for this mixer. I'll find another way to prevent splatters or the mixer is useless also if I can't go any faster than 2 on the speed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well! I've owned this slicer/shredder unit for many years, and I'm happy with it; it works well for most foods. I say most foods because the unit does not do such a good job with things like soft cheeses UNLESS they are chilled to the point of almost frozen, so they are firm. This unit works great on firm textured foods! I use it most often for slicing potatoes for scalloped potatoes, and for shredding cabbage to make coleslaw. I used to use a low speed when slicing/shredding foods. I have found that this unit does a better job if the machine runs at a medium speed. For the other reviewers who couldn't get the shredding cone off of the shaft: look at the top of the tunnel on the shredder housing unit. You'll see a square hole. Stick the end of the shaft in there, and then you can turn the cone to release it from the shaft. And utilize that square hole when you want to get the shaft tightly onto the cone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome attachment I used the thick slicing blade for slicing carrots. It worked well. Sliced them thinner than I was aiming for, but it only took two minutes so it was worth it. I used the shredder for cucumbers (it does say to use it for hard vegetables). It was very very messy. I ended up cutting the core of the cucumber out and it was much better. In the end I got what I needed and it took a total of 5 minutes. I am very happy with it.
