Rated 1 out of 5Â by cjsncnw Very poor
Good idea but very poorly executed. Sound sensors seem to be triggered by darkness so go off when anything covers the sensors. Thus, you don't have to put a puzzle piece in its correct spot to hear its corresponding sound (i.e. if the horse puzzle piece is put over the dog spot it will bark). This flaw makes the product useless as a educational toy. Sound sensors also go off when room lights are turned off and will continue to go off randomly until lights are turned back on. Batteries must be removed to prevent this from happening as there is no off/on switch. The sound quality is also very poor.
Rated 1 out of 5Â by angrymama sounds work when it wants to
I'm so disappointed! Such a costly investment and it works only when it feels like working. I purchased two sound puzzles and they're both the same - temperamental! The cat sounds AWFUL and so fake! The other animal sounds are almost true to life, but the cat is fake! The dog and cat stopped working, then 2 minutes later all the animals stopped working. Then i took it into the other room and it worked, but not all the sounds. The batteries are brand new and Duracell (so not cheap dollar store batteries) and its impossible to get to work when i want it to. I'd recommend it only if it worked...

My one-year-old grandson loves to place the pieces so he can hear and mimic the sounds, but there is a lot of frustration because it doesn't always work. This thing has very erratic behavior. Place a piece, no sound. Repeat, no sound. Repeat, appropriate sound. Dump them all out, place all pieces - no sound from any. Try that again - all works fine. Sometimes it all works fine right from the start. And yes, the batteries are fresh! Maybe we just go a defective one, but it is fun for him when it works right.
Rated 2 out of 5Â by rosieposie4425 Not as nice as other Melissa and Doug products
While the shape and size of puzzle pieces is appropriate, the sounds that the animals make are barely indistinguishable from one another. The cow sounds like the sheep, which sounds like the pig, which sounds like the duck. The puzzle does not work like you would expect either. For example, the puzzle will sometimes make the wrong animal sound, or if a puzzle piece is near the correct space, it will sometimes make a sound, which to me, defeats the learning opportunity. One time, my daughter stood on the puzzle when there were no pieces in place, and the puzzle made sounds.
Overall, this product could use some improvement, and my 18 month old daughter enjoys playing with the standard version of the Melissa and Doug puzzles much better than this one.
