Rated 2 out of 5Â by Utahkirk Poor train quality & Incompatible with other sets
We purchased this set last Christmas. Building the base was not too complicated, but I donât recommend saving it for Christmas Eve. Use lots of glue and the thing will last a long time. If you donât use any glue, it will get wobbly fast. It looked great under the tree and my son was ecstatic.
The track looks great when it is all set up, however, there are NO alternative layouts. What you see in the picture is the ONLY way to have the track set up. For me this is a HUGE downside to the set. For the last year the track has been virtually unused because as soon as the track gets knocked down (usually in the first 3 hours of play my son decides it would be cool to have a tornado, earthquake, or hurricane destroy the town) the set is useless until mom or dad have 20 minutes to spend rebuilding it.
The kids always try building something new with the pieces, but get discouraged because the pieces are so specialized that there is no way for them to create their own configuration. This set discourages creativity by limiting you to one layout. I have considered just gluing the whole thing together so it is at least set up when they want to play with the trains and cars.
The train is very low quality and the magnets that hold the cars together are too weak to keep them together as you go up the hills. This fact will make you want to buy new trains, but BEWARE⦠the track is not a standard gauge. If you buy new trains, they WILL NOT fit on the track. We bought a âThomas the Trainâ battery powered locomotive for my son to use with the track, but the track is slightly narrower than the standard wooden train set and when it goes through the turns, it derails.
I give it 2 stars for the nice base otherwise it would be one star. I would not recommend this set or any other that has this same track configuration. There are three or four brands that all use this same cheap track layout.
