This box is beautiful, reminds me of my toys I had when I was younger. The only problem with it is that most kids attempt the top shapes first and then move downward. The problem with this is that the box is only large enough to tightly fit all the shapes in at the base, when the child attempts to put the shapes in the bottom slots, it becomes stuck and will not move in, causing frustration. Also, the lid comes off very easily when holding the box upward to see the sides slots which could help with the bottom shapes getting stuck. But the box is an attractive toy that is timeless.

I really wanted a shape sorter for my daughter & was disappointed when this arrived. The blocks themselves are great - love the bright colors - perfect for sorting games. And, the shapes fit into the slots fine.
However, my main complaint is that the top is TOO easy to remove. When my daughter moves the box to find the slot for the shape, the top slides right out. It really should have some sort of feature that locks it into place while in use. Plus, I wish it was painted also (but, that's a personal preference).
It's a good shape sorter, but not great.

The toy is exactly what it appears to be and my only gripe is with how it works rather than its construction. Like all Melissa & Doug toys I've purchased, it's sturdy to the point of being too heavy. The problem is that the lid is not hinged and does not stay closed. When using the toy with small children, you want to be able to pick it up and turn it around so you can put the shapes through the holes. When you do that here, all the shapes fall out of the unlatched, unlocked lid. Most competitive products have a way to secure the lid - this is common sense. Not sure why this one wouldnt have it, but I wouldn't buy it again.

My sons Aunt and Uncle gave this to my son for his 1st bday. It is a great toy for learning etc but the wood was chipping easy and my husband found pieces of it in my sons mouth!! We weren't sure if this toy is supposed to be a rough, splinter type or if there is to be a finish on it?? The blocks are great but the box seems unfit for small children?? Is there someone who could help us with this situation, like should it be returned or exchanged? Thank you. Melissa and Doug are a great company so that's why we are a bit surprised.
