The base material of these jeans is a greenish gold. Although the outside surface is dyed blue, as these jeans wear over time, the greenish gold will show through limiting what you can wear with them.

Black jeans are supposed to stay black. I have some very old Lee and Levis jeans (505s) that are still very black after years of wear and washing. Not so for these 514s, which are now dark grey after just a few months. Even worse, they stretch out, especially in the seat. If you can wear them, I recommend the black 511s with 1% elastane (spandex), which hold their shape better. Be careful when ordering, though, since Levis sizing is wildly inconsistent from one style to another. This is one situation where it is advisable to go into the store to try them on, or to order multiple sizes with the expectation of returning all but one of them.

I've always loved the 514's and 513's for their fit, and the fact that most any retailer carries them, so you can get them anywhere. However, there's a major lack of sizing consistency with these jeans. I bought two pairs of the exact same size 514's, and one pair was literally 2 inches longer than the other (I measured with a ruler). I double-checked the sizing on the jeans to make sure they didn't send me the wrong size, but they were both marked as 38-32. I ran into the same issue at the store when exchanging. The variation in sizing was terrible. I had to try on 5 different 38-32's before I found one that was truly 38-32.
