I mostly wanted to make zucchini "noodles." The food guard would not hold the zucchini so that I could make more than one swipe across the blade without having to reposition the zucchini on the guard. Push the vegetable onto the spikes, slide it over the blade, pick up the vegetable which has fallen off the guard, replace it on the spikes, make another slice, etc. I don't have that kind of time--sorry! I haven't tried it since or on any other food. I will. I'm hoping it will work better with something, but a zucchini . . . really? How hard could it be to stick into one of those so that you can slide it up and down without it falling off the guard? :-(

I got the mandoline slicer and could NOT wait to try it, so I got out some onions to slice for a salad. Now, since the directions are not very good, my problem could be user error, but it was very difficult to slice the onions and the effort didn't seem worth it. I haven't tried anything else yet, so it might be better for other vegetables. I bought this mainly for french fries which I haven't tried yet.

So far I have only used the straight blade, but had no problem adjusting the width and using it right out of the box. I have used it to slice potatoes and sweet potatoes very thin and made potato chips in the microwave. I was skeptical at first, but the chips take btwn 2 - 5 minutes depending on the thickness and microwave power. Even my picky husband likes them!

This is the third mandoline slicer I've tried and I won't need to try any more. Slices beautifully, easy to handle, clean and change blades. I liked it enough to buy one for a friend as a gift. I've only used it for basic tasks, but can hardly wait to try it for fancier jobs.
