For the most part, I love it. I accidently broke my last vacuum sucking up a dog toy. I bought the DC40 the next day. It pulled quite a bit of dust out of the same carpet I had just cleaned. I love the ball and the suction.
There are a couple of negatives though -It was tricky putting it together. It looks cheep and plastic as you are connecting the parts and I was a little afraid I would break it before even using it. However, there were no issues. Also, I find it a bit awkward. The power button is half way down the front of the vacuum and the handle could be a little taller. When you dump the canister, be prepared to have some dust escape. Opening it low into a kitchen trash can seems to work okay.

The DC40 is a really good vacuum. It has plenty of suction and it is very easy to maneuver. It is light weight which helps going up and down stairs. I would certainly recommend this vacuum to anyone looking for a new one. I was a little concerned at first with the size of the vacuum as it was smaller than others ones I had. But after a few days of using it you no longer notice it is smaller and it probably has something to do with the amount of powerful suction it has.
Only flaw, the extension hose is too tight. if you want to vacuum out a car or something, the hose tightens up too much pulling the vacuum into what ever you are trying to vacuum.

The first time I used my new vacuum, I was so excited with all the dirt and grim that was picked up, but also a little disgusted by what my old vacuum missed. I love that I get immediate satisfaction seeing everything right in the bin. I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to vacuum all the way up my staircase without having to lug my vacuum up and down. Although, it would be pretty easy with how lightweight it is. Also, my house has mostly hardwoods with area rugs throughout, so I enjoy the option to have the brushes spinning or not. My only concern is piercing the hose with the extension rod, only time will tell with that. Overall, best vacuum I have ever owned!

Overall works great just wish it was a little more powerful as I do have pets and my vacuum before did just as well cleaning and picking up pet hair. For the price I thought I would notice a difference even though Dyson has a vacuum designed for pet owners but I could not justify spending the amount I already did for this version. I do like that it is easier to move it around a being it much lighter having the ball instead of wheels does work better than a standard vacuum.
I would not recommend if you own pets who shed because you can spend much less money for the same results unless your looking for a vacuum that is lighter and has better control.
