I think that people are confused with the instructions that are included because they are quite vague, and in may opinion, backwards. I found this rod to be the perfect color for my bathroom. I had no problem tightening it once I thew the enclosed directions away.
Hold it with the smaller diameter part of the rod in your left hand. Slide the little plastic "collar" out of the larger diameter tube.
Now, put it up against the wall. While holding the SMALLER diameter tube, rotate the LARGER diameter tube away from you until the rod is nice and tight against the wall.
Now just slide the plastic "collar" back into the the larger tube, and you're done!

I was very excited to install my new shower rod. I liked that no hardware was needed for the installation. Following the directions I extended the rod to fit the walls and twisted the ends tight. I then watched as the rod slowly slid down the wall. Picking it up to try again, I twisted the rod and found it would not "unlock". Waste of time and money.

this item would not screw out to width indicated on the packing. I tried to twist out with a tool and scratched the surface, and therefore could not return it.

The metal of this rod is very thin. I thought it was a twisting, tension rod....it is not. It does twist, but there is no tension spring. You have to tighten the rod as much as you can and hope it stays in place while you install it.
