A standard unit block is 5.5 inches long, 2.75 inches wide, and 1.375 inches thick. These blocks are (1-1/2-by-2-by-5-inches). It may seem like a minor difference, but it is significant. True standard unit blocks are twice as long as they are wide and twice as wide as they are thick. This makes them a valuable spacial learning tool because it gives kids hands on ways to explore putting two halves together to make a whole (among other mathematical concepts. I am very fond of most M&D toys. It is disappointing that they miss-label these blocks as standard unit blocks.

I had originally intended to purchase the set that contained 100 pieces, but settled on this one instead. These blocks are VERY durable! My kids (he's 4, she's 7) got these for Christmas 2011, and this is probably the most played with toy they have. They build houses and towers and castles, etc, then knock them down. With all that demolition work, only one block has a tiny chip in a corner. Plastic toys come and go, but I think these will be around for a very long time. Good, quality wood. Really gets the creative juices flowing.

I LOVE IT So much i have purchases another set so the kids can go BIGGER!!! I bought these blocks for my daycare as a creativity toy and found so many more wounderful uses. Being a standard Unit is great 2 small blocks make a med block 2 med blocks make a big one etc. It has even shown useful in helping my 10 year old (who has learning disabilities) the basic concepts of fractions and geometry!! This product remains the best value it takes a beating from the littest and still provides quality for everyone!

Love that the blocks are naked. At first I was a little wary that they weren't colorful, but it grew on me that the concentration would be on the project and the textile, I loved that you could see the grain and the workmanship. They arrive in a separate and well packaged box from the manufacturer as well. I can't wait to give them to my grandson.
