  • 3 cups cold milk
  • ½ cup confectioners' sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla
  • Pinch salt
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Cinnamon sticks (optional)

  1. Whisk the milk, sugar, cocoa, cornstarch, vanilla and salt together in a saucepan. Cook over medium-high heat, whisking constantly until mixture boils, about 2 minutes. Reduce heat to medium and continue whisking until thickened, about 30 seconds more.
  2. Pour into mugs, top with cream and add a cinnamon stick, if desired. Serve immediately.

Mulled Pomegranate-Apple Cider

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups pomegranate juice
  • 3 cups cider
  • 6 dried pears
  • 6 dried apples
  • 2-3 strips orange zest
  • 5 cardamom pods
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 5 allspice berries
  • 1 star anise
  • Brandy, rum, vodka or port

  1. Put pomegranate juice and cider in a saucepan along with dried fruits, orange zest and spices. Warm gently over low heat, stirring occasionally, until fragrant, about 30 minutes. Take care not to let the mixture boil. Serve in mugs with spices, dried fruit and a splash of your favorite liquor.

Vietnamese-Style Iced Coffee

  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 cups strong brewed New Orleans coffee (coffee with chicory)
  • Well-chilled ice cubes

  1. Briskly stir the sweetened condensed milk into the chilled coffee until blended. Fill 4 tall glasses with ice and pour in the coffee mixture.
