What is a Sport Coat?
There are many different terms out there for garments like sport coats - sport jackets, blazers, etc. A sport coat is essentially any jacket that has the appearance of a suit jacket, but does not come with a matching pair of pants.
Believe it or not, a sport coat is actually a casual piece of clothing, despite the fact that, in today’s fashion world, it seems more of a formal piece. While a business suit is deemed more formal, a sport coat is typically considered a few levels of formality below that.
How to Style a Sport Coat for Men
When adding a sport coat into your wardrobe, there are a few things to consider:
- Proper fit is still essential. When it comes to the length, look for an option where the hem hits at about the midpoint of the back pockets on your pants. For sleeve length, pick a sport jacket that hits slightly above the intersection of your wrist and thumb. Opting for a sport coat that doesn’t go all the way to where the thumb and wrist meet means the cuff of the dress shirt underneath the blazer will be slightly visible. At your shoulders, the seams of the sport coat should contour to the shape of your shoulder. The seams should end at the spot your shoulders do - makes sense, right?
- Since, as mentioned above, sports coats are a casual addition to your look, be sure to be aware of the occasions where sport coats are acceptable. When attending a funeral or a job interview, go with a suit. If you’re attending a wedding as a guest, or have a business casual dress code at the office, sport coats are sure to fit in perfectly.
- Another factor to consider is the weather, and time of year in which you’re looking to mix the sport coat into your wardrobe. Because of the added fabric and weight that a sport coat features, the autumn and winter months are ideal for adding in a jacket. But there are lightweight sport coat options out there, too, so don’t shy away from trying to wear one in summer or spring!
