Why Would You Need a Flask?

Flasks have been around for thousands of years in some way, shape, or form - from canteens made of animal hides, to vessels made of earthenware and other rudimentary materials. The modern version of a flask came about in the 18th and 19th centuries, and became almost an exclusive container for transporting hard liquor discreetly.

Nowadays, flasks feature a rounded body that matches the contours of the body. This shape makes it less visible in the pocket than an item with a sharper edge. This means that flasks can be taken to places with no one even knowing you have one on you.

So why use one? Flasks, and the use of them, tend to have a reputation that’s not great. Sneaking around alcohol in public isn’t generally seen in a positive light. But there are times and places where using a flask, or even giving/receiving one as a gift is acceptable and basically an expected tradition.

Typically, flasks are used as groomsmen gifts, given by a groom to the group of close friends and family he has standing up in the wedding with him. This allows for some camaraderie, as the group might share a toast together on the wedding day. Flasks given as gifts might feature some kind of engraving, a monogram, or other personalization as well, to mark the occasion.

There are several factors to consider when using a flask:

  • Be aware that states may have laws against use of an open alcoholic container in public.
  • Don’t take a flask on an airplane - outside alcohol is not allowed.
  • If you are attending a private event, like a wedding or a party at a friend’s place, a flask can come in handy if you know your favorite spirit will not be served.
  • When opening a flask to take a drink, be sure to offer a sip to those standing nearby. It’s polite and proper to do so.
  • Refrain from taking a flask to a place that sells drinks. Using a flask in a bar or restaurant makes one seem rude and cheap. Also, be considerate and respectful and don’t take a flask into a place of worship or to a solemn event like a funeral.
  • Don’t use the flask with the intent to overindulge. No matter what, be responsible and know your limits.
  • Only use flasks for special occasions - carrying one with you at all times can paint an undesired picture.

Flask Materials

Stainless steel is the most common flask material. Stainless steel flasks are durable, lightweight, and don't usually affect the flavor of the alcohol. Be sure to keep your flask clean, and it should last for a good, long time.

Leather flasks are actually made from stainless steel, but are covered in a decorative leather casing. This gives you the advantages of stainless steel, with the timeless appeal and look of leather.

Flasks can also be found made of plastic, which lasts a long time and is inexpensive and lightweight. However, plastic can potentially impact the flavor of the drink, so be mindful of that.

Caring for Your Flask

The first thing you should do when receiving or purchasing a flask is to clean it. Cleaning a flask requires using something other than typical dish soap, as the residue of the soap is near impossible to remove.

Clean your flask every few uses. Instead of soap, put a mix of vinegar and water inside and shake. Afterwards, rinse and leave hot water in it overnight.

Also, when filling your flask, use only 80-proof alcohol or above. Lower alcohol beverages such as beer or wine don’t keep well in a flask. Cocktails, cream-based spirits, and citrus liquids will deteriorate or even damage the interior of the flask. So stick with whiskey, bourbon, rum, gin, brandy, and other similar beverages.

With a new flask from Kohl’s, you're prepared to give a gift that will be cherished for years to come. No matter if you’re giving it to your best man, or buying a licensed flask that shows off your gift receiver’s favorite sports team logos, we are sure to offer the right item you need to make an impression!
